Ingredients

Instructions


To make the sponge:
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan) and line two 20cm round cake tins with baking parchment.
  • In a large heatproof bowl, melt the dark chocolate and butter in the microwave or over a pan of simmering water.
  • Once melted, add the caster sugar and cocoa powder and whisk together until well combined.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition, then add the vanilla extract.
  • Add the self-raising flour and orange zest and stir until just combined.
  • Divide the mixture between the two prepared tins and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  • Once baked, leave to cool in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.


To make the orange buttercream filling:
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter until light and creamy.
  • Add the icing sugar and beat until well combined.
  • Add the orange zest and orange juice and beat until light and fluffy.
  • Spread the buttercream filling over one of the sponges and sandwich together with the other.


To make the chocolate ganache topping:
  • Place the dark chocolate in a medium heatproof bowl.
  • Heat the cream in a small saucepan until just boiling, then pour over the dark chocolate.
  • Whisk together until smooth and creamy, then leave to cool until thick and spreadable.
  • Spread the ganache over the top of the cake, using a palette knife to create swirls.
